A Global Collective Comes Together on Easter Island to do Good and Set a New World Record!
We are still trying to process all that we experienced while on Easter Island. It was truly an unforgettable experience … one full with the highest of high moments with Sarah Ferguson becoming the first person ever to swim around the perimeter of the island; but also the lowest of low moments upon seeing first-hand how bad the plastic pollution problem is on this most treasured and remote UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There is so much to share in the coming weeks, but have a start by watching this fun video of highlights, and by visiting our blog, where you will already find a few great reads!
A Record-Breaking Swim from a Truly Genuine and Inspiring Woman
The Easter Island swim has been the toughest I’ve done, and I really had to dig deep. On March 15, as dawn was still to make an appearance, my team and I readied ourselves for this momentous challenge that lay ahead. Around me, people gathered with messages of well wishes and encouragement and the sound of AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ filled the air. It was one of those moments where I tried not to think too hard about what I was about to do and just dived into the water and began, leaving behind the echoes of shouting and cheering.
A Native Son Returns Home to Premiere His First Feature-Length Documentary
On March 15, 2019, our team at Plastic Oceans International was proud to present the Easter Island premiere of Eating Up Easter, a new feature-length documentary from director Sergio Mata’u Rapu. It’s a powerful film that examines several social and environmental issues that are front and center on the island, providing lessons for us all, no matter where we call home.
It was honor to have Sergio with us to present the screening, as it is to offer this short Q&A him. You’ll find the official trailer to the film at the end of this interview, but it can also be viewed HERE.
Please enjoy this guest post from John McCarthy, who served as the Safety Officer and Navigator for Sarah Ferguson’s recent world-record Swim Against Plastic. An eyewitness account of Sarah Ferguson’s world-first circumnavigation swim of Easter Island
4000 people have climbed Mount Everest, 2000 people have swum the English Channel, 12 people have walked on the moon, only one person has successfully swum non-stop around Easter Island or Rapa Nui as it is known to the local inhabitants. Rapa Nui is politically part of Chile, but due to its isolation from the mainland it has retained its own cultural identity and even has its own language. This is an eyewitness account of Sarah Ferguson’s epic swim around the island which was completed at 03h15 on Saturday 16 March, local Rapa Nui time.
