MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PERU
ABOUT LIMA
With a population of almost 9 million inhabitants Lima is one of the largest cities of South America. Overlooking the Pacific, Lima was once one of the most important cities for the Spanish conquerors, capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. The spot where the city lays in the Rímac valley already was names Limaq in the original Quechua language before Pizarro conquered the city in 1532. Many of the current tourist attractions date to those Spanish times, and in 1988 the cities historic centre was declared a UNESCO world heritage site. With a metropolitan population of over 9.5 million people Lima is facing many environmental challenges, one of them being waste management.
We are fortunate to work with a great local NGO in Lima that advocates for sustainable community practices and better waste management: LOOP
