Eating Up Easter showing on Saturday, October 5 at 5:30 pm
About the Festival: The Eugene Environmental Film Festival is a multi-venue weekend event full of meaningful and inspiring films, discussions, speakers, workshops, art, live performance and music in downtown Eugene. The Eugene Environmental Film Festival (EEFF) seeks to raise awareness of all that is the environment globally and locally. We aim to provide a holistic perspective concerning the ways that we enjoy the environment; to understand the ways the environment feeds and nourishes us; to address the exploitation and harm to the environment; and to explore ways that we resist and protect the environment. Our vision is to help raise awareness and inspire positive, lasting change.
About Eating Up Easter: In a cinematic letter to his son, native Rapanui (Easter Island) filmmaker Sergio Mata’u Rapu explores the modern dilemma of their people who risk losing everything to the globalizing effects of tourism. The film follows four islanders, descendants of the ancient statue builders, who are working to tackle the consequences of their rapidly developing home. Mama Piru leads recycling efforts to reduce trash, Mahani and Enrique use music to reunite their divided community, and Sergio tries to understand the motivations of his father who embraces the advantages of building new businesses. These stories intertwine to reveal the complexities of development and the contradictions within us all as we are faced with hard choices about our planet’s future.
