Merijn Tinga

Plastic Soup Surfer, Biologist, Artist.

Known as the Plastic Soup Surfer, Merijn Tinga is on a mission to stop the increasing threat of ocean plastic pollution. He draws attention to this global problem by paddling, kiteboarding and windsurfing on surfboards made from plastic waste to make a statement.

Tinga combines his record attempts and campaigns with creative legal instruments, petitions and resolutions, addressing chief executives, legislators and policy makers to generate real solutions that prevent plastic pollution.

Tinga was recently ranked #85 in the Dutch Sustainable Top 100 for his push towards bottle deposits in the Netherlands. He and his team recently completed a second documentary film about plastic pollution and adventurous campaigning, called Plastic Paradox. Tinga is a trained biologist and has a career as a visual artist, in addition to a full-time activist.
