How does swimming relate to plastic pollution?

We decided to find a new way to fulfill our mission and communicate our message about plastic pollution to the public from a sports perspective. We want to connect people around the world to this problem, in a positive way. In the past, sports have opened the doors to conversation on highly controversial issues, and the response has often been warm and rewarding. So Plastic Oceans thought why not take a similar approach with environmental issues? We started this effort with the inaugural Swim Against Plastic in March of 2019, when we ventured to iconic Easter Island, which resulted in a world-record swim by South African endurance Athlete, Sarah Ferguson.

Creating Awareness and Inspiring Solutions at Another UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Swim Against Plastic (visit official website HERE) is an environmental movement and campaign that focuses on swimming and a social approach to the problem of plastic pollution. We are looking to open the eyes of the world to this crisis. We want to change the discourse and focus it, so that people can identify with this problem from a positive perspective. The first swim took place on Rapa Nui, where endurance swimmer Sarah Ferguson set a world record. She became the first person to swim the entire perimeter of the island, non-stop. Rapa Nui is one of the most remote places on the planet, and yet the one of the most affected by plastic pollution and  microplastics.

Swim Against Plastic, es un movimiento/campaña ambiental desde un enfoque del deporte y el trabajo con comunidades. Buscamos abrir los ojos del mundo ante la crisis por contaminación plástica, cambiando el discurso y enfocándolo para que las personas puedan identificarse desde una perspectiva positiva y diferente. El piloto tomó lugar en la Isla de Rapa Nui, donde la nadadora Sarah Ferguson rompió un récord al nadar todo el perímetro de la isla sin descanso.
