BLUECOMMUNITIES

Amalfi Coast, Italy

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

ABOUT THE AMALFI COAST

The Sorrento-Amalfi Coast is one of the most spectacular territories of South-Italy. It mixes the terrestrial ecosystem with old villages and ancient agricultural techniques, together with the marine culture and the underwater resources that the sea conserves. The Amalfi Coast is part of the Unesco World Heritage Sites due to its scenic charm, which is an attraction for tourism. The terraced landscape provides many different microhabitats and a high level of agro-biodiversity in the form of many ancient fruit and vegetable varieties making it an important area for cultivation such as for lemons.

Our local BlueCommunities are ACARBIO and MAREA. These are NGO’s that take action to avoid and repair environmental damage by activism, education and community projects.

MareaThe MAREA association was started in 2016 consisting of an oceanographer, marine biologist, artist and mariner. Marea promotes the protection and safeguarding of the natural, terrestrial and marine environment, respecting the different forms of life, animals and plants, the safeguarding of the historical and cultural heritage, with particular attention to the Sorrento-Amalfi area, adopting actions and eco-compatible practices that fall within the principles of sustainable development and the idea of mutual symbiosis, or of close relationship between different organisms to obtain mutual benefit.

PROJECTS

In partnership with ACARBIO and MAREA we are focused on the following efforts:

Make it Blue

Every summer international volunteers come to the Amalfi Coast for volunteering activities for the sea, the beach and the mountains. Important activities of the project are clean ups on beaches and in the mountains, environmental education activities and cultural exchange. In addition, there are workshops on sustainable lifestyles, recycling and language exchange as well as actions on local food production and community gardening. Through this variety of activities, volunteers gain a deeper understanding of sustainability.

La Baia in Fondo al Sentiero

This program combines conservation, monitoring and communication in order to protect one of the treasures of the Peninsula: the Bay of Ieranto. This project is carried out in collaboration with the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella and with the Italian Foundation for the Environment (FAI). It consists of 100 days of activities during the summer season to reduce illegal activities in the bay (motor navigation, anchoring, fishing) and to promote ecotourism.

Project M.A.R.E.

Since 2013 the MPA of Punta Campanella has hosted European Volunteers thanks to the cultural exchange programs promoted by the European Commission. Marea Outdoors takes part in this initiative with tutoring and mentoring activities with a group of young activists that work for the park. The role of the Association is to lead the group of volunteers during clean ups on the beach and in the sea with kayaks.
