Film Screening: Meaningful Movies of Renton

Maltby Meaningful Movies 22105 East Lost Lake Road, Snohomish

Please join Maltby Meaningful Movies for a showing of “A Plastic Ocean,” an astonishing and highly motivating documentary about the effects of plastics on our marine environment. You will be treated to a striking view of our oceans and will learn about how plastics make their way into the ocean, break up into smaller plastics, attract toxins, and get into the food we eat. The movie ends with an enlightening look at ways that we can cut down on plastics, saving the marine environment and protecting our own health. After the movie, you will be part of a discussion on the impact of plastics on our local marine ecosystem and what you can do to to enact change.

Kyla Wilson, Plastics Campaign Coordinator at Zero Waste Washington, works with communities across the Puget Sound region to prevent plastic pollution and increase the value of our recycling and compost. Zero Waste Washington is a non-profit organization based in Seattle that works state-wide to prevent sending trash to landfill or incineration by encouraging recycling, composting, and reuse. Zero Waste Washington has been offering support and guidance to jurisdictions around the state interested in reducing the amount of single-use plastics they consume and their environmental burden through policies like reusable bag ordinances, styrofoam bans and straw bans. Many of these single-use plastics cause contamination in our recycling and composting facilities and often end up as litter and ultimately marine debris. Kyla has a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of California, Los Angeles and will begin her MSc in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science this Fall at Lund University.
