Plastic Oceans one of five environmental nonprofits benefiting from second annual fundraiser
Since 2017, Plastic Oceans International has been a nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet. We are pleased to support their mission of, “inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual memberships and everyday actions.”
1% for the Planet was founded by business owners Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia and Craig Matthews of Blue Water Flies in 2002. They both shared a passion for the natural world and surmised that it was becoming more and more fragile. They came to the same conclusion; they had a duty to protect it. They agreed to give 1% of their profits back to the environment every year, regardless of their bottom line.
The idea caught on. Soon, brands like Honest Tea, New Belgium Brewing, Kleen Kanteen, and more joined the movement. Today, 1% For the Planet has 2,000 members in 45 countries. They bring together individuals and corporate members with 1%’s nonprofit partners, matching passions, values, and interests for the good of the planet.
This year, Plastic Oceans is proud to be added to 1% for the Planet’s My Planet Pass program. This unique fundraiser, in its second year, allows members to make a bigger impact by supporting five environmental non profit organizations with one donation. Special perks available only through a Planet Pass, are given to donors, all while supporting the planet they love in five different but equally important ways. The other nonprofits also participating in this year’s My Planet Pass are:
Protect Our Winters (POW): POW turns passionate outdoor people into effective climate advocates. POW leads a community of athletes, thought pioneers, and forward-thinking business leaders to affect systemic solutions to climate change.

Fair Trade USA: Fair Trade USA enables sustainable development and community empowerment by cultivating a more equitable global trade model that benefits farmers, workers, fishermen, consumers, industry, and the earth. We achieve our
mission by certifying and promoting fair trade products.
Pollinator Partnership: The Pollinator Partnership is the largest organization dedicated exclusively to pollinator protection. They would like everyone to remember, “Pollinators are responsible for one out of every three bites of food.”
National Forest Foundation (NFF): Chartered by Congress, the National Forest Foundation was created with a simple mission: bring people together to restore and enhance our National Forests and Grasslands.
