ABOUT CARTAGENA
Cartagena or formerly known as Cartagena de Indias is one of the oldest ports of Colombia at the Caribbean Sea. It’s wide bay has made it a historically strategic city and has seen many battles in its almost 500-year old history. It’s colonial walled city and the fortress are a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Like many big cities around the world also Cartagena has serious waste management problems, especially in the communities in its outskirts.
We are fortunate to work with a great local NGO partner that is advocating for sustainable community practices and better waste management: Fundación Bahía.

LOCAL PARTNER
FUNDACIÓN BAHÍA y Ecosistemas de Colombia Fundación Bahía is a non-profit non-governmental organization created in 2014. It´s purpose is protecting the bay of Cartagena and surrounding bodies, conserving its ecosystems, working with its eco-dependent communities, and fighting against ocean plastic pollution and promote the adaptation of the city to climate change with science, education and economic alternatives.
PUNTA ARENA SUSTAINABLE
The project seeks to strengthen environmental education, the recovery and conservation of the territory and generate changes in positive environmental habits to improve the quality of life in the community. For this, the strengthening and training of local grassroots organizations is foreseen, which will be disseminators and responsible for raising awareness in each of the community’s homes, with the guidance and guidelines of the project. The necessary technical assistance is provided for the implementation of “Sustainable Actions” such as: productive yards, composting, source separation, recycling and environmental artistic interventions.
CLEAN SEAS: GUARDIANS OF THE OCEAN
It is an educational platform and campaign that is based on our “I am Sea” campaign, which invites self-knowledge and recognition of our ecosystems in order to better know, love and care for them. It also calls for responsible consumption through the clean sea pact, to avoid single-use plastic and to improve environmental practices. The project is integrated with the work in the different island communities and neighborhoods of Cartagena. We can all be Guardians of the Ocean!
