Conflict Islands,
Papua New Guinea

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OCEANIA

Making A Difference In Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula

ABOUT THE CONFLICT ISLANDS

The Conflict Island Atoll is comprised of 21 small islands about 80 miles off the east coast of Papua New Guinea. They have been noted for their staggering biodiversity and are currently under consideration for a World Heritage Site listing. It is a place that needs to be protected, for the future of the health of the environment and the people who rely on it.

LOCAL GOALS
• Protecting and preserving the Biodiversity of the Conflict Islands for future generations

• Monitoring Endangered Turtles and caring for their nests and hatchlings, shark and manta ray diversity studies, coral reef and fish health and biodiversity surveys

• Plastic Collections of marine debris clean ups, that includes plastic reduction within habitat of the endangered and monitored species above.

• Devising improved waste management solutions.

LOCAL PARTNERS

CONFLICT ISLANDS CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

Conflict Islands Conservation Initiative (CICI) has various marine conservation programs including Manta Rays, turtles, coral reef and health, Sharks and also marine debris. In just a year a dedicated team of just a handful of people have collected over 2 tonnes of marine and plastic waste that has washed ashore the Conflict Islands Atoll, one of Sylvia Earl’s Mission Blue Hope Spots, in Papua New Guinea.

CICI has developed a long-term turtle tagging program to monitor the populations at the Conflict Islands and their connections to the Coral Sea. This project studies the population of nesting female green and hawksbill sea turtles to create a baseline data-set and to assess the effectiveness of ongoing conservation efforts in the area, which together with Plastic Oceans support will continue in future nesting seasons.

OUR PROJECTS

In partnership with the Conflict Islands Conservation Initiative (CICI), we are focused on the following efforts:

IMPROVING WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

Plastic Oceans will work with CICI to devise a sustainable and ecologically sound solution to help deal with the copious amounts of waste this group of islands and their Conservation Rangers collect. We wish the project to have a scalable, inclusive and possibility of incentivising element  for other community groups to get involved and also do their part in helping protect these amazing marine areas of Papua New Guinea.
