ABOUT DURBAN

Durban is the third largest city in South Africa, with a population of 3.5 Million people in the city and surrounding region. It sits directly on the Indian Ocean, has the largest sea port in sub-Saharan Africa and is renowned for its beaches, surfing and marine life.

We are proudly partnered with local NGO, Breathe Ocean Conservation.

LOCAL GOALS
• Develop youth and adult workshops to educate on plastic pollution, marine conservation and reforestation.
• Protection of coral reefs in coastal waters.
• Reduction of plastic pollution in coastal areas and in the Umgeni River.
• Increased awareness about plastic pollution.

LOCAL PARTNERS

Breathe Ocean Conservation logo Breathe Ocean Conservation works to eliminate plastic pollution from our oceans and to promote overall marine conservation in Durban, South Africa, and beyond.

Their efforts are led by record-setting endurance swimmer Sarah Ferguson, who in 2019 became a Guinness World Record holder when she became the first person ever to swim around the entire perimeter of Easter Island – all done to raise awareness about plastic pollution and the need to protect our seas.

OUR PROJECTS

In partnership with Breathe Ocean Conservation we are focused on the following efforts:

CORAL REEF & COASTAL CLEANUPS

Plastic Oceans is supporting the cleanup efforts of Breathe and several other organization’s in Durban. Their monthly cleanups bring together an eclectic mix of stakeholders, and serve as an important awareness and education tool for the entire community.

YOUTH EDUCATION

We support Breathe’s efforts to take their educational message to schools throughout South Africa. They serve as engaging educational workshops that help children grasp the basics of plastic pollution and the value of protecting our ocean environments.

EVENT-BASED ACTIVISM

Plastic Oceans and Breathe collaborated on a major campaign to raise awareness about plastic pollution. Swim Against Plastic resulted in world-wide attention driven by world-record swim by Breathe’s founder, Sarah Ferguson. We continue to work together to use this experience as an education tool, which has included the publication of a book about the journey, Swimming Easter Island, and a documentary film to be released in 2021.
