Ana Hanhausen Shares Her Experience In Being Recognized for Her Environmental Work
Earlier this year, the Youth Merit award ceremony was held for citizens between the ages of 12 and 29, bestowed by the Congress of Mexico City. The award was given to six young people who excelled in different fields. I had the honor of being awarded in the environmental field for my activities in 2018 and 2019.
I, like many people, had no idea that the Congress granted this type of recognition. I want to tell you about my experience at the event and what I did to receive this award.

Small things can make a difference.
We were about halfway between Tonga and the Lau group, a mostly uninhabited cluster of islands in the eastern division of Fiji in early September last year. We had a rough beginning of our passage leaving Vavau. Two of the five crew members were severely seasick during the first days. Another two were “uncomfortable” however able to stand watch. For myself, well I haven’t exactly been going to sea every second week as of late, so I was a little crusty to say the least.

Personal log from the Chile science director Camila Ahrendt, who was on board the entire 19 hours of Sarah Ferguson’s world record swim around Rapa Nui. In these 19 hours she kept a personal log besides her official tasks on board like taking GPS measurements, make photos every half an hour that would serve as evidence of the swim and coordinate between the South African team, the captain, crew and the mainland. In her personal log she observed life on board, what went on behind the scenes, the swimming conditions and all the emotions that come about when you are part of such an epic event. This is an unedited recount of events, straight from the log.
The rain came quickly and without warning. The umbrella was useless against the force of the downpour. The streets quickly flooded and cars sprayed the sidewalk with water. It took just minutes to be soaked from head to foot. I considered turning back to the hotel, but I was already half-way to the cinema and 300 people were waiting. My hosts at the Asian Development Bank were calling.
