Environment & Food Foundation to Be Local Partner

February 22, 2021 – Malibu, California – Plastic Oceans International (POI) announces that their BlueCommunities initiative has expanded to Douala, Cameroon, in Central Africa, partnering with local NGO, Environment & Food Foundation (E2F).

Launched in January of 2021, BlueCommunities is a global network of environmentally-focused organizations founded on the belief that we can, and must, act within our local communities to inspire change on a global scale. Through supporting local partners and their projects, POI’s goal is to firmly establish the building blocks needed for creating socioeconomic and environmental change that benefits the entire planet.

“Joining the Blue Communities program is a great breakthrough for our organization,” said Achare Elvis Ayamba, founder and executive director of E2F. “It’s a platform which will enable us to meet great minds and to share, learn, interact and inspire others worldwide to get involved in solving our global environmental issues.”

Created in 2018, E2F envisions a reality where every individual has the opportunity to contribute to the socio-economic development of their communities, has access to sufficient, affordable and nutritious food, and has the right mindset to live in harmony with nature and our blue planet.

“We could not be happier with having a partner like E2F and in supporting the important work they are doing in Douala and in surrounding communities in Cameroon,” said Tod Hardin, Chief Operating Officer for Plastic Oceans International. “We now have two BlueCommunities on the African continent, where important environmental work often gets overlooked, so I’m personally excited to be able to amplify the projects of E2F, as well as that of our partners in Durban, South Africa.”

A river of plastic waste is what the community of Douala faces daily.

POI will be supporting E2F projects related to plastic reduction, including cleanups, recycling initiatives and community education; as well as conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems within the Douala-Edea National Park.

The addition of Douala comes just days after Santa Marta, Colombia, became the seventh BlueCommunities location. It’s a quickly expanding initiative that includes other locations in Campeche, Mexico; Chiloé Island, Chile; Detroit, USA; Durban, South Africa; Easter Island; and Kerala, India. Soon-to-launch are locations and partners in Hawaii; The Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea; Mallorca, Spain; and The Bahamas.
