John McCarthy is a renaissance man. He is a surfer, author, freediver, adventure guide, innovator, educator and entrepreneur. August 2, 2019 – MALIBU, Calif., U.S. – Plastic Oceans International, the nonprofit organization working to end global plastic pollution, today announced that the documentary film, Eating Up Easter—presented by Plastic Oceans; producer and director, Sergio M. Rapu; producer and writer, Elena Rapu; Kartemquin Films and Pacific Islanders in Communications—won the Portuguese Surf Film Festival Best Sustainability award.
Han pasado seis meses desde que empezamos la producción de un nuevo cortometraje para niños y niñas, de 5 a 10 años de edad y estamos encantados de anunciar que estamos a unas semanas de completarlo. La película va junto a un suplemento educacional que es fácil y atractivo para que disfruten los estudiantes y maestros, y el programa completo estará disponible sin costo a instituciones educacionales.
It has been six months since we started production of a new short film for kids, aged 5 to 10 years old and we are thrilled to report that we are a few short weeks away from completion. The film is paired with an education supplement that is easy and engaging for students and teachers to enjoy, and the full program will be made available at no cost to educational institutions.
On March 15, 2019, our team at Plastic Oceans International was proud to present the Easter Island premiere of Eating Up Easter, a new feature-length documentary from director Sergio Mata’u Rapu. It’s a powerful film that examines several social and environmental issues that are front and center on the island, providing lessons for us all, no matter where we call home.
It was honor to have Sergio with us to present the screening, as it is to offer this short Q&A him. You’ll find the official trailer to the film at the end of this interview, but it can also be viewed HERE.
La ultima vez que fui a la verdulería, mi hijo de 8 años me recordó traer mi bolsa reutilizable. Fue un recordatorio a través de una pequeña acción que demuestra cómo la próxima generación ya tiene integrada esa nueva norma social de que tenemos que usar menos recursos y reutilizar.
Niños/ jóvenes en todo el mundo están compartiendo sus acciones y difundiendo el mensaje de que sí podemos frenar la contaminación por plásticos. Queremos compartir esas historias en nuestro próximo cortometraje que estará enfocado exclusivamente en niños.
Recibimos muchas historias de estudiantes que inician programas de reciclaje, juntando dinero para estaciones de hidratación, recordando sus padres que deben dejar de usar bolsas plásticas, estudiantes convirtiendo basura plástica en arte u otros productos…Todos ellos entienden que hay muchas formas para ser parte de la solución y están tomando acción para proteger los océanos y el futuro.
En nuestra nuevo película queremos compartir algunas de esas historias para empoderar a otros niños alrededor del mundo. Les invitamos a subir un video de su hijo/sobrino/vecino en que ellos compartan lo que están haciendo para reducir la contaminación por plástico.

Children are natural problem solvers. They believe that any problem can be solved, as they are unaware of the hurdles of the politics and process that adults accept as natural barriers to progress.
We’ve seen this first hand via our direct interaction with schools and youth community organizations throughout the globe. It’s that youthful creativity, innovation, and fearlessness that inspires us every day and that is the driving force behind a new project that we are excited to announce here for the first time.
The rain came quickly and without warning. The umbrella was useless against the force of the downpour. The streets quickly flooded and cars sprayed the sidewalk with water. It took just minutes to be soaked from head to foot. I considered turning back to the hotel, but I was already half-way to the cinema and 300 people were waiting. My hosts at the Asian Development Bank were calling.
