“We cannot protect something we do not love, we cannot love what we do not know, and we cannot know what we do not see. And touch. And hear.” – Richard Louv.
For many people, the ocean is a nice place to relax, unwind, and gather thoughts. We sit at the beach and watch wave after wave come in. But the ocean is so much more than that. It’s difficult to imagine the wide array of life that thrives beneath the surface of the water if you’ve never been diving or snorkelling. It’s not like going for a walk in the woods, where you can immediately see some of what nature has to offer. That’s why it’s so important to share images and videos of the beautiful creatures that call our rivers, lakes, and oceans home, making visible the beauty of these aquatic environments.
This is the first in a series of blogs that I’ll be writing about the results of the research I have been conducting in Northern Patagonia – a remote, beautiful and iconic region of Chile. This project started in April 2019 and I hope to finish it during 2020. In this first installment, I’ll tell you more about why I went there and what I hoped to find.

Imagine a magical island nation where you can swim alone with humpback whales. A place where you can always be assured that the whales will return the same time each year to give birth and nurse their babies.
Even after being lucky enough to witness this place with my own eyes, year after year for over a decade, I still find it hard to believe such a heavenly/magical place like this exists right here on earth.
Sustainability Hacks is a code-free hackathon that brings local sustainability-driven organizations, UBC faculty members, and ambitious students together for a weekend of synergy and innovation. Students will work collaboratively in teams of 3-6, in consultation with faculty members, to “hack” a solution to an issue that a community organization (such as Plastic Oceans Canada) faces.
Plastic Oceans Chile’s Executive Director, Mark Minneboo will be at the road map solution prioritization session, where they will identify the initiatives to be implemented by the Chilean Plastics Pact members in the first execution period (2020-2021).
