The Plastic Oceans International team is delighted to learn of the ambitious efforts underway to eliminate 99.4% of single-use plastic items at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
Con motivo del 25 aniversario de Tommy Hilfiger en México en alianza con Plastic Oceans Mexico, unieron esfuerzos para llevar a cabo por primera vez en el país la campaña Swim Against Plastic: Riviera Maya, a fin de crear conciencia sobre el uso desmedido de plástico desechable y la cantidad excesiva de contaminación que estos residuos están provocando y su impacto en el medio ambiente y la salud de las personas.

It’s motivating to see how quickly plastic pollution awareness has grown around the world. Awareness is a critical first step in the global movement to rethink plastic and end the global plastic waste problem. But much more must be done to effectively act on plastic.
A circular economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste because it involves continual use of resources.
In practice, it implies reducing waste to a minimum. When a product reaches the end of its life, its materials are kept within the economy wherever possible. These can be productively used again and again.
Since 2017, Plastic Oceans International has been a nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet. We are pleased to support their mission of, “inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual memberships and everyday actions.”
¿Cómo relacionamos el deporte (nado) con la contaminación?
Decidimos buscar una nueva forma de cumplir con nuestra misión y comunicar nuestro mensaje al público desde un ámbito deportivo y que conecte a las personas de todo el mundo, de manera positiva. El deporte ha abierto las puertas a temas de alta polémica, y la respuesta ante estos ha sido de lo más cálida y gratificante, entonces ¿Por qué no hacer lo mismo con temas ambientales?
Cada ves es más escuchado y las personas se están uniendo para levantar la voz por nuestro medio ambiente debido a las consecuencias que está sufriendo por culpa del ser humano. Todos quieren participar, desde su trinchera, a través de su profesión o de sus actividades diarias. Con esta campaña, damos oportunidad a que el deporte se utilice como agente de cambio en esta lucha, para que estos iconos atletas inspiren a personas a actuar sobre esta problemática en nuestros océanos. Queremos impulsar a que estas personalidades inspiren a muchas mas personas a cambiar sus hábitos para combatir esta lucha. Somos lo suficientemente afortunados de tener una voz, hagámosla oír. No importa si eres nadador, surfista, administrador, cocinero, etc; todos podemos generar un cambio.
How does swimming relate to plastic pollution?
We decided to find a new way to fulfill our mission and communicate our message about plastic pollution to the public from a sports perspective. We want to connect people around the world to this problem, in a positive way. In the past, sports have opened the doors to conversation on highly controversial issues, and the response has often been warm and rewarding. So Plastic Oceans thought why not take a similar approach with environmental issues? We started this effort with the inaugural Swim Against Plastic in March of 2019, when we ventured to iconic Easter Island, which resulted in a world-record swim by South African endurance Athlete, Sarah Ferguson.
With our second installment of Swim Against Plastic just around the corner, taking place in Mexico’s Riviera Maya region November 7-9, we are ecstatic to have Sarah Ferguson’s world-record swim around Easter Island officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
The Swim Against Plastic (visit official website HERE) is an environmental movement and campaign that focuses on swimming and a social approach to the problem of plastic pollution. We are looking to open the eyes of the world to this crisis. We want to change the discourse and focus it, so that people can identify with this problem from a positive perspective. The first swim took place on Rapa Nui, where endurance swimmer Sarah Ferguson set a world record. She became the first person to swim the entire perimeter of the island, non-stop. Rapa Nui is one of the most remote places on the planet, and yet the one of the most affected by plastic pollution and microplastics.
