There is something undeniably majestic about the deliberate movement of a turtle. Whether it is the slow, composed crawl of a tortoise, or the quiet ease of a sea turtle in blue water, the presence of these creatures strikes us with a kind of ancient familiarity, captivating our hearts and minds.

Plastic is everywhere and this seems to be common knowledge these days. It’s all over our grocery stores, in our food deliveries, all throughout the oceans, come to think of it, it’s actually hard to find an ecosystem or community that isn’t riddled with plastic waste. What remains a mystery is if plastic is making its way in our bodies.

Sea turtles have been traveling our oceans since the time of dinosaurs, but they are dying. Fast. I have volunteered with a number of organizations in the past and you get all sorts from the big ‘corporates’ to the small one-(wo)man- bands fighting for or against whatever is pressing in a particular place – plastics, a particular species, human rights – the whole gamut. So when I decided last summer to go and join a small team of environmental activists and one biologist working to protect the Hawksbill Sea Turtle, on the coast of Campeche in Mexico, all I really knew was that there were turtles involved – the rest I knew was a big unknown, no matter how much I tried to find out ahead of time.

A recent study by the University of Manchester concluded that 1.9 million pieces of microplastics can be found on the ocean floor of the Mediterranean Sea. This quantity was found in a space of only 3 square meters. According to Science magazine, almost all of the pieces discovered came from small clothing fibers. But there is evidence that not only clothing fibers reach the ocean.

June 8, 2020 – Campeche, Mexico – Plastic Oceans International, a global non-profit dedicated to ending plastic pollution and fostering sustainable communities, has joined a project in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to help protect the Hawksbill Sea Turtle, which is one of the most endangered marine animals worldwide.
