It’s all about the little victories

During these challenging times I think many of us have had a moment to think about the choices we have made the last few years to end up where we are right now. The career we chose, the family we have, the house (and country) where we live and also, what will we will be doing once this is all over. How many times have I read and heard “I can’t wait for things to get back to normal”….well “normal” was a climate and environmental crisis, so I’d rather not return to that.

If there is one certainty these days, it’s that the coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we navigate the world. As we become more mindful of how we can become vectors of disease spread, we’ve become less mindful of the footprints we leave behind, in particular with our plastic footprints. Now that global society is prioritizing sterilized items above all else, more plastic gloves than ever end up in the trash after a trip to the grocery store, more plastic cutlery is disposed of after a single sitting, and more “insert single-use item here” is disregarded at first drop for fear that it is now contaminated.

For those of us who are in more fortunate positions, where we can take a moment to pause, we find the silver linings and the unexpected gifts of hope. In those moments, we find the strength to protect our families, communities and the essential needs on which we depend. I believe clean air, water and food are essential and things only a healthy planet can provide.

Es difícil creer que ya estamos a finales de abril. Las últimas semanas han desafiado nuestra seguridad, nuestra moral y nuestra fuerza de voluntad.

Para aquellos de nosotros que estamos en posiciones más afortunadas, donde podemos tomar un momento para hacer una pausa, encontramos un rayo de luz y los inesperados dones de la esperanza. En esos momentos, encontramos la fuerza para proteger a nuestras familias, comunidades y las necesidades esenciales de las que dependemos. Imagine a magical island nation where you can swim alone with humpback whales. A place where you can always be assured that the whales will return the same time each year to give birth and nurse their babies.

Even after being lucky enough to witness this place with my own eyes, year after year for over a decade, I still find it hard to believe such a heavenly/magical place like this exists right here on earth.

Small things can make a difference.

We were about halfway between Tonga and the Lau group, a mostly uninhabited cluster of islands in the eastern division of Fiji in early September last year. We had a rough beginning of our passage leaving Vavau. Two of the five crew members were severely seasick during the first days. Another two were “uncomfortable” however able to stand watch. For myself, well I haven’t exactly been going to sea every second week as of late, so I was a little crusty to say the least.
