On the 4th of February I represented Plastic Oceans International in Lisbon Portugal at the launch event of the Portuguese Plastics Pact. It’s the 6th Pact worldwide after the UK, France, Chile, the Netherlands and South Africa. In Portugal the implementation is being led by Smartwaste Portugal.

February 7, 2020 – MALIBU, Calif., U.S. – Plastic Oceans International is collaborating with fellow conservation nonprofit organization, Kolossal on a campaign called, Act on Plastic. It raises awareness and support, including a petition, for California legislation that would reduce all-materials waste, particularly plastic pollution.
Order prohibits city from purchasing beverages in single-use plastic bottles and restricts sales on city-owned and leased properties
New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio signed an executive order on Wednesday, February 6, banning the sale of single-use plastic beverage bottles on city-owned and -leased properties. The move also bars city agencies from purchasing or selling beverages packaged in single-use plastic containers.
Why is it important to regulate PET bottles to have a real circular economy?
The following column was published in the La Tercera newspaper on Wednesday, January 29, as a clarification about the inclusion of plastic PET bottles in a bill that regulates single-use plastics in Chile.
This bill is currently up for a vote in the Chilean Senate Environment Commission. Some doubts were raised in that same newspaper about including plastic bottles in the bill, because according to the authors of a previous article, plastic bottles are 100% recyclable and by regulating them many waste pickers would lose their main source of income.
